Many of the Friends participate in the volunteering sessions run by Ranger Nick Macfarlane on behalf of Waverley Borough Council. These sessions aim to maintain the Park for the benefit of all users and also include conservation tasks for encouraging wildlife.
Volunteering sessions take place on Wednesday mornings, starting at 9am. A break for tea/coffee and home-made cake is an essential feature! Additional volunteer-led sessions also take place, usually Friday mornings from 9:30. Contact the Ranger for details of upcoming sessions.
Volunteering tasks include:
Hedge-laying along The Avenue
Fence building, for example erecting dead hedges around the ponds
Installing benches
Scrub clearing, to allow young trees space to grow
Hazel coppicing, to provide material for fencing
Clearing invasive vegetation from the ponds
Creation of wildlife habitats, such as stag beetle habitats and a reptile hibernaculum
Removal of invasive species such as balsam and ragwort
General estate maintenance, such as removal of old fences, clearing paths, repairing bridges, installing drainage channels
